Virtual Classes using Zoom.

Starting January 11, 2025, the Swedish School-Svenska Skolan will offer classes catering to language learners at Beginner, Continuing Beginner,  Advanced Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels.

In our classes the emphasis will be on continuing the fundamentals of Swedish for our beginners, and oral communication with various practices, complemented with lessons on grammar, textual examinations and analysis in the Intermediate and Advanced levels.

Beginner’s level Swedish classes will be held on Saturday mornings or Thursday evenings. 

 Beginner Class (Term 1) Thursday evening only.

Continuing Beginners (Term 2) on Saturday or Thursday

Saturday classes (January 11-April 12)

*12 course sessions between the aforementioned dates, except Martin Luther King Weekend (January 18th) and President’s Day Weekend (February 15th)

A minimum of 8 students to start a class.

Thursday classes (January 16-April 3)

*12 course sessions between the aforementioned dates.

A minimum of 8 students to start a class.

The course stresses correct pronunciation by frequent repetition and teaches vocabulary and grammatical structures using culturally authentic texts. It focuses on developing your conversational skills through various communicative exercises as well as reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary exercises.

Goal: Basic dialogue about daily life

    • Asking for directions
    • Ordering food

    • Geography and weather

    • Family and relationships
    • Leisure activities including but not limited to shopping
  • Alphabet, numbers and time expressions

Key grammatical areas in this course include the following:

  • Word order, main clause, questions and answers, personal pronouns, definite and indefinite form of nouns in singular and plural, interrogative adverbs, negation, present tense of verbs, auxiliary verbs, help verbs, indefinite form of adjective singular and plural, prepositions

Advanced Beginner’s level Swedish classes will be held on Saturday mornings. 

Dates: January 11-April 12th
*12 course sessions between the aforementioned dates, except Martin Luther King Weekend (January 18th) and President’s Day Weekend (February 15th)

Prerequisite: Students must have completed Beginner level course or equivalent.

A minimum of 8 students to start a class.

This course teaches the same materials (textbook and exercise book) and key grammatical areas as in the beginner’s level class but includes more complex exercises and prepares students to advance to the next level (Intermediate). This class will be complemented with independent learning materials, carefully selected by the instructor, once the Rivstart series has been completed.

Intermediate level Swedish classes will be held on Saturday mornings:

Dates: January 11- April 12th
*12 course sessions between the aforementioned dates, except Martin Luther King Weekend (January 18th) and President’s Day Weekend (February 15th)

Prerequisite: Two years of Swedish language classes or the equivalent

A minimum of 8 students to start a class.

Through oral presentations, written and oral grammar exercises on a regular basis, students in this class will be equipped with skills to carry out longer conversations in informal and semi-formal settings. This class will also help prepare students to participate in discussions on current events, news and themes or subjects related to Swedish language, society and culture.

Goal: Increased skills and comfort level in spoken and written Swedish language:

  • A variety of meaningful and creative “hands on” exercises will be offered to boost spoken and written Swedish language skills in common everyday life situations
  • Fun and interesting texts, articles and news items are regularly shared with students for increased vocabulary, conversational and reading or analytical skills

Key grammatical areas in this course include the following:

  • Adverbs, adjective and nouns in definite form, superlative of adjectives, past participle and perfect participle of verbs, passive form of verbs, intransitive and transitive verbs.

Textbook: Study materials include independent texts from daily newspapers and instructor-provided extracts from a pool of educational Swedish language resources or books

Advanced level Swedish classes will be held on Saturday mornings:

Dates: January 11-April 12th
*12 course sessions between the aforementioned dates, except Martin Luther King Weekend (January 18th) and President’s Day Weekend (February 15th)

Prerequisite: A solid background in Swedish
A minimum of 8 students to start a class.
Intensive course conducted in Swedish only

Goal: Increase proficiency level and advanced vocabulary and grammatical comprehension

  • Focus on more complex conversations and discussions about everyday life, current events and special interests.
  • Lessons on how to give well-organized and creative oral presentations of novels; students will present their work to one another and regularly receive feedback from the instructor and classmates on areas of development

Key grammatical areas in this course include the following:

  • Advanced level grammar exercises for further development, including textual and critical analysis

Textbook: Study materials include independent texts from daily newspapers as well as texts written to highlight cultural aspects of Swedish society
