The Swedish School-Svenska Skolan is a Saturday morning language school. It started in 1971 in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1991 it was incorporated into the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The following year, it was established as a non-profit organization under the IRS code, section 501(c) (3).
In September 2020 the Swedish School switched to virtual teaching on Zoom.
There are four different levels of instruction from beginners to the most advanced, taught by Swedish instructors. The Swedish School is one of the largest Swedish language schools for adults in the United States.
Our school year is divided into two semesters that run from the middle of September to the end of April. Each semester has twelve 2.5 hour sessions with a total of 30 hours of instruction. Six weeks of Summer School with communicative exercises is offered from May to June each year.
The school uses the most up-to-date textbooks and teaching materials available from Sweden, supplemented by newspaper articles, videos and DVDs. Our teaching priority and goal is that students can express themselves in Swedish. In addition, we stress writing using correct grammar.
Who are our students? Many have Swedish spouses and a keen interest in learning the language, particularly if their children attend Svenska Skolan for children. Others may have Swedish partners, a Swedish background, be college students or have made connections with Swedes online. Additionally, some are preparing for academic research, work opportunities, or studies in Sweden. You are welcome to study with us for all and any reason!
The Swedish School – Svenska Skolan is a non-profit organization under IRS code, section 501 (c) (3).
The school has a non-discriminatory policy and therefore does not discriminate against students on the basis of race, color, and national or ethnic origin.
